America’s Demand for Ductless Mini Split Systems is Growing

Sales of ductless mini split systems are growing at an exponential rate

Ductless mini split systems are being featured all over home improvement and DIY cable channels lately. You may have even missed them because of their unobtrusive design, but they’re not hard to spot if you know what you’re looking for. Does seeing the systems more on TV reflect a wider upswing in popularity? Well, yes.

The growing trend toward ductless

Starting in 2007, ductless mini split systems began gaining traction in the HVAC world. Oil and Energy Online stated that from 2007-2014, the US growth rate for these revolutionary systems hit 221 percent. This comes as no surprise, as ductless set-ups offer consumers increased energy savings and a greener option than other HVAC systems on the market.

In 2015, more ductless options and features were introduced to the public, bringing even-better alternatives for heating and cooling a home or commercial space. Properties that were previously hard to connect to a current air conditioning system or even small spaces where ductwork wasn’t an option now have simpler solutions. A report from Chisult Insight Co., Ltd estimated that the ductless mini split could, “… come to represent 15 percent of the industry for both residential (approximately 10 percent) and commercial (approximately 5 percent).”

A recent industry article published by The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration News also notes the seven-year growth of ductless mini split system unit sales, adding that the trend was driven by benefits that consumers value highly, such as efficiency, greater control, and convenience.

And perhaps the most powerful case for a move toward DMS was published in a study by Markets and Markets. The research firm estimated that the global ductless industry will be worth $78.62 billion by 2021 and projects an increase in growth of 8.81 percent a year.

Why are consumers choosing ductless mini split systems?

Efficiency may be the main reason a ductless mini split is purchased but once installed, many other benefits are realized. One particular performance point highlight is zone control, which allows you to regulate the air temperature in specific parts of your home. Variable speed technology creates precise environmental control and less electricity usage so you can focus on your comfort while living green – and enjoying lower energy bills. Even the U.S. Department of Energy has touted the advantages of ductless mini split systems. The agency notes these units may be small in size, but they’re big on both energy efficiency and flexibility.

Another reason consumers are taking the leap from traditional air conditioning units is the increase in indoor air quality with the ductless mini splits. The filtration technology traps the contaminants in the air instead of reintroducing them back into the environment, whereas conventional air conditioners mean dust can get trapped in the ducts. Currently, some ductless mini split brands offer silver ion filters that are highly effective at removing common allergens, bacteria, and even viruses from the air.

The features of ductless mini split systems let you easily take control of your home’s heating and cooling. Consumers also spend $11 billion annually to power their air conditioners – and switching to a high-efficiency ductless mini split system can reduce energy use by 20 to 50 percent.
